Rice Pudding

Rice Pudding

We love desserts! Preparing them might take a little extra work and passion (and add weight), but rice pudding is an easy-to-make and filling dessert, snack, or can even be a full meal. After cooking it for a short time, it can rest in your [Pot Cozy|cozied] Container or even your sleeping bag while preparing the main course, and by the time dinner is devoured, your dessert is ready. Top it with whatever your surroundings have to offer (blackberries for example!), and you can finish the day with that wonderful tired-legs, full-belly happiness.

  1. Melt butter and fry rice (optional)
  2. Add milk (cold) in ratio 1:4 (rice-milk-volume)
  3. Add rice if you haven’t fried it and optional ingredients
  4. bring to boil (stir constantly!)
  5. Once it boils, you can either let it simmer until done (stir stir stir!) or turn of the stove and let the rice pudding sit in a warm place for 1-4 hours.
  6. Add topping of choice.

Super slooow cook
The trick to put only little fuel and work into this dish is to let it sit in a warm place rather than let it simmer. Simmering rice pudding in a thin walled camping pot is quite difficult. We use our cozied Containers and place it inside our sleeping bags. It takes a while, but no burn, little work and enough time to take care of the main dish make this dish a low hanging fruit.

Consistency
The difficult part is to get a good consistency. The two keys are the liquid-to-rice ratio and fat. Fresh fat-rich milk is the best. Since we barely ever transport fresh milk but powdered milk, we try to make it “stronger” than we would for example for our Overnight Oats.

Easy to burn
Bringing the milk-rice mix to boil on a camping setup is prone to burning. Stir frequently and use the super slooow cook technique from above.

…and don’t forget to squeeze your lemon.
